Selina Andréa Scott is a Diné (Navajo) and Latina artist from Tempe, Arizona. She graduated from Arizona State University and completed a BFA in Drawing in 2021. Selina is inspired by her Indigenous and Latino heritage, and the focus of her work is to progress their representation in contemporary art and share the beauty of these communities. The main themes in her art include the exploration of identity, matriarchal ideas, connecting to nature, and pride in her culture. She creates in traditional mediums like oil, acrylic, graphite, and pastel but also explores work in digital illustration and three-dimensional work.
In 2021, Selina was one of 40 artists selected for the AXA Art Prize that exhibited at the New York Academy of Art in New York. Selina is based in Phoenix, Arizona and has displayed her artwork in local exhibitions and events at ASU, Xico, Cahokia, and the Heard Museum. In 2024, Selina honored her homeland and family in her first solo exhibition, Feels Like Home, at Cahokia.
My work focuses on my connection, identity, and experiences as a Diné and Latina woman. Growing up miles away from Navajo reservation and my Latino family in Texas, I struggled with a sense of displacement, often feeling neither fully connected nor embraced by my own Latino roots or Diné heritage. Creating has become an important pathway to reconnecting and self-acceptance of belonging to two similar but different cultures.
I have found the greatest way to connect and celebrate the beauty of the communities I come from through portraiture. Among painting self portraits and hands, I am comforted in painting my relatives and our relationships with each other and Mother Earth. I am drawn to realism and painting on wood surfaces. With its natural pattern, wood has assumed a significant role in my current artistic practice. I select panels characterized by intriguing wood grain, seeking patterns that inspire unique designs or compositions. I relish in the time and detail required to achieve a life-like warmth and realism in my work. My paintings aim to pay homage to both cultures and progress the portrayal of Indigeneity in contemporary spaces with work inspired by my own life and experience.
